Retractable + fixed configurations
Awnings — outdoor shade for Temora & regional NSW
Folding-arm awnings extend over outdoor entertaining areas; pivot-arm and channel awnings shade individual windows. Powder-coated frames, marine-grade fabric, motorised options.
Which awning type suits your application?
Three awning styles cover almost every AU residential use case: folding-arm for large outdoor areas, pivot-arm for individual windows, channel for narrow openings. The right choice depends on the span and how often you need it retractable.
Folding-arm (retractable)
The classic outdoor entertaining awning. Articulated arms extend the fabric horizontally over the deck. Manual crank or motorised. Spans up to 6-7m.
- Spans up to 7m
- Manual or motorised
- Wind sensors auto-retract
Pivot-arm (window-specific)
Smaller awning that pivots out over a single window. Best for shading west-facing bedrooms and bathrooms without permanent fixed structure.
- Per-window deployment
- Manual operation
- Lower cost than folding-arm
Channel / fixed awning
Permanent fixed-frame awning that doesn't retract. Used over front entries, balcony doors, and narrow window openings. Lowest maintenance.
- Permanent installation
- No retraction mechanism
- Heritage and modern styles available

Awnings — frequently asked
- How much do awnings cost in Australia?
- Folding-arm retractable awnings typically run $1,500–$5,000 supplied + installed in Australia (2026), depending on span and motorisation. A standard 4-metre folding-arm awning with manual crank quotes $1,500–$2,400; motorised with wind sensor adds $700–$1,200.
- Folding-arm or fixed awning — which lasts longer?
- Fixed channel awnings last longer (15-25 years) because there are no moving parts to wear. Folding-arm awnings have a 10-15 year mechanism life; the fabric is the main wearing part and is replaceable separately. For an outdoor entertaining space you use 200+ times a year, folding-arm is still the right choice.
- What fabric is best for awnings?
- Solution-dyed acrylic canvas (e.g. Sunbrella, Dickson Orchestra) is the AU standard for awnings. It resists UV fade, mildew, and moisture better than PVC-coated polyester. Warranties typically 5-10 years against fade. Marine-grade options for coastal installs.
- Are motorised awnings worth the extra cost?
- Yes if you use the awning multiple times a week. The motor + wind sensor combination retracts the awning automatically if wind exceeds the safe threshold, which protects the mechanism from damage. Manual crank awnings often get left out in storms because the homeowner isn't home — leading to torn fabric and bent arms.
- Can awnings handle Australian sun?
- Quality awning fabric is rated for AU UV. Solution-dyed acrylic warrants 10 years against fade in most cases. We recommend retracting the awning when not in use to extend fabric life — the same way you would close blinds at night to protect interior furniture.
- Do I need council approval for an awning?
- Retractable awnings attached to an existing house wall don't require council approval in most NSW LGAs (treated as minor home improvement). Permanent fixed-frame awnings that change the building footprint may require a development application. Check your local council's exempt development list.
