Roller blinds — sunscreen, blockout & motorised for NSW homes
Sunscreen for UV protection without losing the view; blockout for bedrooms and theatre rooms; motorised options with Somfy and Acmeda smart-home integration.
Sunscreen vs blockout vs translucent — which roller blind suits your room?
Roller blinds come in three fabric categories that each suit different rooms. The right combination across a house gives you light control, privacy, and energy savings without overspending.
Sunscreen fabric
Semi-transparent weave that blocks 85-99% of UV while preserving the outward view. The Australian default for living rooms and front-of-home windows.
- Openness factors: 1%, 3%, 5%, 10%
- View-preserving in daytime
- Pairs with blockout for bedrooms
Blockout fabric
100% light-blocking when fitted with side channels or pelmets. Standard for bedrooms, shift-worker homes, and theatre rooms.
- 100% light blocking
- Thermal-lined options available
- Pair with sunscreen for layered control
Translucent / privacy fabric
Mid-density weave that diffuses light and obscures view but lets daylight through. Common in bathrooms, ensuites and laundries.
- Daytime privacy preserved
- Soft diffused light
- Lower cost than blockout

Roller Blinds — frequently asked
- How much do roller blinds cost in Australia?
- Custom roller blinds typically run $150–$400 per square metre installed in Australia (2026). Sunscreen fabrics sit at the lower end; thermal-lined blockout and motorised options at the upper end. A standard bedroom window (1500×1500mm) commonly quotes $300–$700 installed.
- Sunscreen or blockout — which is better?
- They serve different rooms. Sunscreen preserves the outward view while blocking UV — best for living rooms and front-of-home. Blockout completely darkens — best for bedrooms, theatre rooms and night-shift sleepers. Many homes mix both, sometimes layered as a "double roller" on the same window.
- What is the openness factor on sunscreen fabric?
- Openness factor is the percentage of light that passes through the weave. AU residential defaults: 1% (darkest, most view-preserving when looking out), 3% (most common), 5% (brighter interior), 10% (gym/commercial). Lower openness = darker room + clearer outward view.
- Are roller blinds child-safe?
- Yes — modern Australian-supplied roller blinds use child-safe chain mechanisms that meet AS/NZS 4055 child-safe standards. Motorised blinds eliminate the chain entirely and are the safest option for nurseries and play rooms.
- Can roller blinds be motorised?
- Yes. Battery-powered tubular motors (Somfy Sonesse, Acmeda Automate) fit inside the roller tube. Control via remote, wall switch, smart-home app, or voice assistant. Battery life is typically 12-18 months between charges; hardwired options run indefinitely.
- How long do roller blinds last?
- Quality custom roller blinds last 10-15 years with normal use. The chain or motor is usually the first part to wear; the fabric typically outlasts both. We carry replacement chains and motors for every brand we install.
