Zipscreens — outdoor wind-rated screens for NSW homes

Convert open verandahs, pergolas, and entertaining areas into useable rooms year-round. Side-channel zip locks the fabric edges so wind, dust and sun stay outside.

Which zipscreen suits your outdoor area?

Three configuration variables: fabric (mesh openness), wind rating (Beaufort scale), and motor (battery vs hardwired, manual vs smart-home). The right combination depends on your exposure and how often you use the space.

Mesh sunscreen fabric

95-99% UV protection with full outward view. The standard fabric for verandahs and pergolas. Available in dark for view-preservation or light for cooler interior.

  • 95-99% UV block
  • Full outward view preserved
  • Quietest fabric in light wind

Tinted sunscreen fabric

Higher-density weave with bronze or charcoal tint. Better glare control + slightly more privacy. Best for west-facing afternoon-sun verandahs.

  • Reduced afternoon glare
  • Mid-density privacy
  • West-facing recommendation

Acrylic awning canvas

Heavy outdoor canvas in solid colours or stripes. Used when full blockout is desired (sleepout / outdoor cinema). Loses the view but adds another 5-8°C cooling effect.

  • Full blockout option
  • 5-8°C cooling delta
  • Heritage / striped aesthetic available

Zipscreens — frequently asked

How much do zipscreens cost in Australia?
Wind-rated outdoor zipscreens typically run $600–$1,200 per square metre installed in Australia (2026), depending on motor type, fabric, and wind rating. A standard pergola opening (3.5m wide × 2.4m drop) commonly quotes $3,500–$6,500 motorised + installed.
What wind rating do residential zipscreens need?
Most AU residential zipscreens are rated Beaufort 6 (39-49 km/h sustained) which covers everyday weather across inland NSW. Premium installs go to Beaufort 7 (50-61 km/h) for exposed locations and commercial-grade Beaufort 8+ for severe-exposure sites. Above the rating, the screen should be raised to protect the fabric.
Are zipscreens the same as Ziptrak?
Ziptrak® is one specific Australian-made brand of zipscreen, often used generically. There are several other quality brands (Acmeda, Vergola, Issey) that also produce zipscreens with the side-channel zip system. Ziptrak is the original and one of the most installed; the alternatives match or beat it on specific features.
Can zipscreens be motorised?
Yes — most zipscreens we install are motorised. Common motor brands: Somfy Altus, Acmeda Automate, Alpha (battery-powered tubular). Hardwired motors run indefinitely; battery options last 12-18 months between charges. Smart-home integration via RTS, Zigbee, or Wi-Fi bridges.
How long do zipscreens last?
Quality zipscreens last 8-15 years outdoors depending on UV exposure and wind events. The mesh fabric is the wearing part — replaceable without changing the frame or motor. Motors typically last 10-15 years; frames last indefinitely with normal use.
Do I need council approval for zipscreens?
In most NSW LGAs, retractable zipscreens attached to existing pergolas or verandahs do not require council approval (they are temporary shade structures). Permanent fixed screens or installations that change the building outline may require a development application — your local council's exempt development rules confirm.
